What is ejabberd? According to the ejabberd website: ejabberd is a Jabber/XMPP instant messaging server, licensed under GPLv2 (Free and Open Source), written in Erlang/OTP. Among other features, ejabberd is cross-platform, fault-tolerant, clusterable and modular.

Basically, Jabber/XMPP is itself an instant messaging protocol. Its main features include:

  • Secure SSL encryption
  • Group chats
  • Web interface for user/domain management

Since Jabber is a standard protocol, on the desktop work stations the selection of clients that you can choose from is limitless (as long as they exist). The two most popular Jabber clients are Spark and Pidgin.
