HOWTO Connect using RDP in Windows

What you need to know

You need to know at least the name or IP address of the machine you want to connect into (See HOWTO Get your local Windows IP address).

Connecting to a machine via RDP

From the Start menu, select Programs or All Programs. Select Accessories, then Communications, and then Remote Desktop Connection.

In the space next to "Computer:", type the IP address of the computer you are going to be accessing. Click Connect. Note: If you would like to adjust any of your connection settings such as screen size, login information, availability of local hard drives and printers, or keyboard and sound behavior, click Options before clicking Connect.

In the Log On to Windows dialog box, type your username, password, and domain (if required). Click OK. Once you are connected, you can use your remote computer as if you were sitting in front of it. When you are finished, in the Remote Desktop Connection window, select Start, then Shut Down. Or click the close window "X" when you navigate your mouse to the top of the screen. When you connect you will see a network connection icon in the lower right tray bar. When your session has ended right click the connection (it will say “Oceanside” and click the disconnect option.

In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, from the drop-down menu, select Log Off username, where username is your username on the remote computer. Click OK.
